I have an indelible childhood memory of my Aunt Cherie’s beauty routine: It involved her hauling out the ironing board, bending at the waist, and having my Aunt Joyce run the old Sunbeam over her springy curls and stubborn frizz. Such were the lengths she went to for straight hair.
