The Best Kids Bike Helmets

A selection of kids' helmets that we tested to find the best, shown with a scooter.

I was 10 years old the first time I was grounded. It was the summer of 1996, and my friends and I were biking around our suburban neighborhood in central Connecticut without a care in the world. Until my dad pulled up beside us and rolled down his window. A look of stern disappointment crossed his face as he pointed at my helmet, which hung uselessly from my handlebars.

Most experts and parents agree that kids should wear a helmet every time they ride a bike. So it’s worth finding one that your child genuinely enjoys wearing. Luckily, helmet technology has evolved in recent decades, and children’s bike helmets are more comfortable, safe, and stylish than ever.

After testing 26 helmets of varying sizes on kids age 2 to 9, we’ve concluded that the Giro Tremor Child Helmet is the one most kids age 5 to 9 or so should try first, and its larger counterpart, the Giro Fixture Mips II, is the best for older kids about 9 and up (or kids with bigger heads). The Trek Tyro Child Helmet is a close runner-up, and the Giro Scamp Mips II Helmet is the best helmet for most toddlers.
