An electric scooter can be a fast and fun mode of commuting — as long as your route isn’t too hilly, you’re comfortable riding in traffic, and you’re being safe and considerate.

Unfortunately, in the last few years, electric scooters have been involved in several high-profile accidents: Some are the result of cheap or reconditioned lithium-ion batteries, while others are the result of ineffective limiting software that empowers reckless riders to traverse city streets and bike lanes at illegal speeds.

In researching electric scooters, we were surprised how few met our base expectations of safety and usability. We were determined to recommend only scooters that had UL-certified batteries and electrical systems (including motors) and could not travel faster than 20 miles per hour — preconditions for legality in New York City.
