The Best Hair-Removal Creams

Few products are as misunderstood as hair-removal creams. Although they can bring to mind chemical odors and questionable pranks, these creams have actually come a long way from those in the corny commercials of the ’80s. Today’s versions are a great option for speedy hair removal, and they can leave skin smooth for longer than shaving does.

To find the cream of the crop, I interviewed three dermatologists and a cosmetic chemist, and I polled colleagues and friends to discover their favorites. Based on my reporting, I compiled an initial list of 27 lotions, gels, and masks to evaluate. I tested 16 of them and narrowed the list down to seven top contenders, which I sent to a diverse panel of people who used them on their arms, backs, stomachs, groins, thighs, legs, and even toes. After a month of testing, we found a user-friendly remover that’s great for large areas and a thorough, non-irritating cream that’s suitable for more sensitive spots.
