The Best Sofas

Sofas might be the most heavily used pieces of furniture in our homes. And unlike, say, a bed, we expect them to fill various (and sometimes deeply opposing) needs: casual dinner-party seating, second bed, crafting corner, reading nook, and, of course, prime TV-viewing spot.

After years of research and testing, I’ll be the first to admit that there is no such thing as the “best” sofa. In fact, the same sofa can be one person’s dream and another person’s meh. No sofa will serve every single function perfectly, but ideally you can find something that works best for what you prize the most. A lot of our picks can be seen in person — the gold standard for finding something you’ll be happy with — but we dug deep for stores that make purchasing sight unseen as stress-free as possible (by offering things like flexible trial periods, generous fabric swatches, and excellent warranties).

Shopping for a sofa is hard — I know, I’ve heard all your couch-buying woes over the years — but we tried making it a little bit easier (and maybe even a little bit fun) so that you can hopefully get as close as possible to finding “the one.”
