The Best Panettone

When it comes to panettone — the yeasted, enriched Italian bread that’s traditionally bedazzled with candied citrus and raisins — most people fall into one of two camps. They either loathe it and associate it with the disheartening dried-out versions sold at many grocery stores, or they revere it and look forward to its bright citrusy flavor and pillowy texture every holiday season.

Growing up in an Italian American family, where there was never enough panettone to go around, I naturally fall into the latter camp. It reminds me of lazy holiday mornings in my pajamas enjoying more than my fair share of it with a cup of coffee.

Though excellent panettone can be transcendent and nearly impossible to stop eating, many versions — even pricey offerings from artisanal bakeries — are just okay. After tasting 33 panettone, we have 10 picks ranging in price and style, as well as some suggestions for our favorite nontraditional versions. And if you’re a panettone diehard, we have several picks that are available year-round.
