Our 12 Favorite Kids Magazine Subscriptions

My kids don’t pay much attention to the mail that arrives daily, but they do perk up every month when they spot their favorite magazine on top of the stack.
Particularly for a generation that has grown up with screens, there’s an appealing novelty to the tactile experience of receiving a print magazine in the mail, flipping through it, stumbling across an intriguing headline or picture, ripping out a page (or a poster or collectible cards), and being wowed by a dramatic two-page spread. To this day, my teenage daughter’s walls are decorated with pictures and photographs saved from her favorite childhood magazines. That’s just not possible with blink-and-you-might-miss-it social media.
Not every kid will take to any given title, of course. But for reluctant readers and bookworms alike, a subscription that matches their skills and interests can feel approachable, spark a love for reading, and offer the opportunity to explore a favorite subject — or discover new ones.
We’ve curated some of our favorites, from long-running classics like Highlights and Ranger Rick to bold newer titles from parent companies ranging from Sports Illustrated to McSweeney’s (any of them may be available at your local library). An annual subscription can also make a special gift from miles away, connecting the giver to the kid recipient.
