When I Sold My House, I Left Everything Behind — Except This Iconic Office Chair

Earlier this year, I sold my house and everything in it — except my office chair.

I purchased my dream home in rural Upstate New York in 2022. It had knotty pine floors, an ancient propane tank, and 1.75 acres of green that, after living in cramped city apartments for most of my adulthood, I’d desperately missed. But after dealing with the ever-present mortgage payments, the contractors, the constant stress, and the harsh reality that my mom wasn’t lying when she said there was “always something,” I realized that homeownership could be as much a sinkhole as it was a dream.

So this year, I did the only sensible thing: I baked the furniture into the asking price and sold everything to the first eligible bidder. The buyers asked me if I really meant everything. I said yes, with one exception: My Herman Miller Aeron Chair.
