Sumptuously soft and terrifically cozy, a cashmere sweater is a welcome and worthy addition to any wardrobe. It’s also an investment. So finding one that looks great, feels comfy, and will last a long time is especially important.

On a quest for cashmere sweaters that are worth cherishing, our panel of style experts tested nearly 70 men’s, women’s, and unisex options (poor us!) in a variety of weights and cuts. We tugged on cuffs and collars, and we purposely pilled the knits. We assessed their warmth in over-air-conditioned offices, at blustery soccer games, and in frigid supermarket-produce sections.

After all that, we landed on 16 standouts to suit a range of tastes, climates, and budgets. You don’t need any of them. But the right cashmere sweater can be a wonderful — and oh-so-rewarding — indulgence.
