If you’re looking for a new game console, narrowing down which one to buy can be challenging. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S have very similar features and game libraries, and then there’s the Nintendo Switch, which is more family-friendly (but far more portable and endlessly fun). For PC gaming enthusiasts, handheld consoles like the Steam Deck make it easy to take your favorite games on the go.

The Nintendo Switch was the most popular console in recent years, and the new Switch 2 is an upgrade in every way. It has plenty of fun games and few downsides, and it’s a favorite among Wirecutter staffers — both the casual players and the video game pros.
