The 30 Best Deals from REI's Annual Winter Sale

Hey, there! It’s me again, Christine Ryan, Wirecutter’s outdoor and travel-gear editor. The winter rains have started here in San Francisco. It’s the time of year when my thoughts turn to the Sierra Nevada, and to snow and skiing — as well as to staying warm on the slopes, which is where REI’s annual winter sale comes in.

Our budget-pick base layers and ski gloves are included in this year’s sale, which is great news if you’re trying the sport for the first time and don’t know how deeply you want to commit, gear-wise.

If you’re more of the flee-somewhere-warm-and-sunny type, you should know that some of our favorite travel gear is on the list: a carry-on travel backpack from Patagonia, packing cubes from Eagle Creek and REI, and the Peak Design Wash Pouch, which I bought for myself a few years back. I don’t leave home without it.

And if you already live somewhere warm, maybe you could use another UPF hoodie, some sunscreen, or a pair of spare sunglasses?

Considering that REI doesn’t open its doors on Black Friday, this sale can be a good time to get a deal.

You don’t need an REI membership to access many of these discounts, but you may want one: Members save 20% on one full-priced item and 20% on one REI Outlet item with coupon code HOLIDAY2025 during this sale, among other benefits. Read our breakdown of whether the one-time $30 membership fee is worth it for you.
