Sometimes Heavier Luggage Is Actually Better

Once upon a time, I assumed that extremely lightweight luggage was the platonic ideal. The lighter the bag, the better.

I dreamed of a suitcase that weighed next to nothing, one that I could somehow pack to the brim yet easily lift.

But that was before it was my job to test luggage. Now, I can safely say I’ve thought, overthought, and re-thought luggage design more than the average person.

And now I see the light — which, it turns out, is heavier than I expected. If you want luggage that’s durable, protective, and easy to maneuver, the lightest-weight bag you can find might leave you disappointed. Still, there’s a limit on your returns, which is why we don’t typically recommend carry-ons that weigh much more than 10 pounds.
