The Best Baby Gate

The ideal baby gate is easy to breeze through while you’re carrying a bag of groceries but also an impenetrable obstacle for a toddler.

After talking to four child-proofing professionals and installing and testing 20 baby gates, we think the best one for most situations is the Cardinal Gates SS-30 Stairway Special. (And it’s the best for dogs too.)

We have additional suggestions for those with wide openings, retractable gates, and freestanding enclosures. But we don’t recommend pressure-fit gates; these popular gates are less secure than our picks, not really easier to install, and actually likely to do more damage to your walls.

The Nugget Is the ‘Original Play Couch.’ Costco’s Version May Be Better.

If you’re a parent of a child under 10, you’ve probably heard of The Nugget, the beloved play sofa that launched a thousand (well, at least 20) competitors. I’ve only recently discovered the category; but now that my eyes are open, play-cushion sets seem to be everywhere — even at Costco.
