Hear Me Out: Instant Coffee Is, in Fact, Good

For years, my family has teased my dad about his bewildering fondness for Nescafé instant coffee.

Even after decades of drinking the (very good) drip coffee my mom auto-brews every morning, my dad became an instant-coffee convert. With a full thermal carafe of the good stuff in front of him, he’ll flip on the electric kettle and dump a few dusty spoonfuls of Nescafé in his travel mug.

Frankly, I still don’t get it. But I can no longer poke fun. Because after a couple of impulse buys — informed by a few rounds of taste-testing for Wirecutter and inspired by my desperation for quick caffeine as a parent — I am an instant-coffee convert, too.

It’s just not the kind my dad drinks.
