Don’t Even Think About Buying a Suit Without Reading This First

Suits are experiencing a renaissance of sorts.
For years, the way we dressed leaned more casual. And when the pandemic arrived, it seemed as if it might kill off the suit entirely.
But these days, suits appear to be everywhere. Menswear experts I’ve spoken to confirm that Gen Z has a growing appetite for suits — not because they have to wear them but because they want to. From where I’m writing this, in downtown New York City, there are at least 15 stores offering men’s suits within a 15-minute walk.
And there’s arguably never been a better time to buy a quality suit at a decent price, as I discovered when I tested more than 25 suits for Wirecutter’s first-ever men’s suit guide.
But few garments are as intimidating (and confusing) to buy as suits. They’re expensive (even the “reasonably” priced ones). There are dozens of variations described with confounding vocabulary. And there are vanishingly few reliable guides on what to look for.
I can help.
My first piece of advice: Take your time. Suits should be treated as an investment. Your goal should be to find a suit you can wear and enjoy for a long time — just like I did with this J. Mueser suit, which I’ve worn some 20 times since I bought it last year.
