The Best Boxed Cake Mix

Boxed cake mix was a staple of my childhood, adding sweetness to sleepovers and school days. My grandma, a prodigious homemaker, almost always used boxed cake mix. She topped boxed red velvet cake with homemade cream cheese frosting and crushed pecans. She babysat saucepans of caramel for what seemed like hours and poured the ambrosial frosting over cooled boxed yellow cake layers.

Cake mix can make baking faster and easier, save you from measuring out dry ingredients and dirtying more dishes, provide a canvas for customization, and fill your home with the smell of baked goods in a matter of minutes, even if you’re in a dorm, on vacation, or haven’t bought flour this decade.

We tasted nine conventional and 11 gluten-free boxed yellow cake mixes ranging from $1 to $9 and found four favorites, whether you want that classic throwback cake-mix flavor or one you could pass off as scratch-made (no heirloom frosting recipe needed!).
