Overheated and Drenched Hikers Keep Eyeing My Hiking Umbrella With Envy. Get. Your. Own.

There I was, 3 miles into a 10-mile hike across Haleakalā, East Maui’s shield volcano. The sky radiated blue, and the trail ahead wound through a landscape of cinder cones and stark lava-rock formations. The sun beat down on my head and shoulders, and I felt uncomfortably hot. But not for long. I pulled out my hiking umbrella and was soon enveloped in cool, dark shade.

Since I first used one on Haleakalā two years ago, hiking umbrellas have become one of my favorite backpacking accessories. I’ve traveled with both the Gossamer Gear Lightrek Hiking Umbrella and the Six Moons Designs Silver Shadow Carbon Trekking Umbrella through miles of sun, rain, and even hail.
