Tricks and Treats: How to Give Pills to Your Pet

I can’t count how many times I’ve found an abandoned pill sitting on the kitchen floor, long after my cat had devoured the ball of tuna I’d so carefully wrapped it in. I’ve lived with pets for several decades, so I know how frustrating it can be to get them to take their meds. The whole process often turns into a battle of wills — and wiles.
Out of curiosity (and slight desperation), I spoke with veterinarians, behaviorists, and my fellow animal caretakers to learn about their best pilling tactics. Before you give up completely, see if any of the recommended methods below can help make pill time less terrible for both of you.
But be prepared to cycle through a variety of methods, so when your animal gets wise to one approach, you’ll be able to nimbly switch to another.
Of course, if you’re having any trouble with your pet, you should always talk to your own vet first. They’ll have the best information available to help.
