How Hard Is It to Install an EV Charger?

There are dozens of EV chargers to choose from (and we recommend a handful of the best). But most people will need to hire an electrician to hook one up.

Thankfully, it’s become pretty easy to find a qualified pro. EV charger installations have become a bread-and-butter part of the job for many electricians. They advertise this service on their websites, on their work trucks, and even on some sports talk-radio ad spots (at least where I live).

“We’re still what I would classify as a smaller company, and we’ll do roughly two a week,” said Chris Haas, owner of Haas and Sons Electric in Maryland. At times, the company has averaged twice that rate. And Qmerit, a national installer, recently said that the first few months of 2025 were their busiest period ever.

Some installations can pose challenges, but electrically speaking, EV chargers aren’t uniquely difficult to install. “We’ve never run into one we couldn’t do,” Haas said. Even in the tricky cases, you might have more options than you realize.

If you think your home presents a unique charging challenge, or if you want to suss out whether you’re talking to a decent contractor, here’s what you should know.
