As a kid, I often came home from school to find half-eaten garbage strewn around the house—the handiwork of our family dog, Freeway. We tried putting her in a crate, but she quickly figured out how to escape. No shoe, sock, or toy was safe from her restless jaws.

The problem wasn’t Freeway or the crate, however. It was us. We didn’t train her properly, and she never got acclimated to being confined or to being a polite suburban dog.

Crates have come a long way since the 1980s, as have dog-training methods. But the basics haven’t changed: The best dog crates should be safe, sturdy, and easy to clean. But dogs need to feel good using a crate—it should be a happy place for them, never a punishment. And to find one they feel comfortable in, you might have to do some searching.
