Can You Remove Dents From Stainless Appliances? We Hit a Dishwasher With a Hammer to Find Out.

There’s a good chance that your sleek, brushed stainless steel fridge or dishwasher has at least one unsightly dent in its otherwise pristine metallic surface.

Maybe you used a moving company with three-star reviews (and no insurance). Maybe you dropped a pot and it clattered against the front of your fridge, or you carelessly opened the dishwasher door too quickly. Or perhaps your rowdy 5-year-old nephew slammed his scooter straight into the fridge, even though you told him a thousand times not to ride it indoors.

From deep, angular dents with hard edges to soft, shallow pits marring surfaces, dents are a reality of owning stainless steel appliances. The heart aches at the sight of them—no matter how small they are—and the mind drifts toward that very question many of us at Wirecutter have also asked ourselves: Can I remove that horrible crater from the appliance I spent hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars on?

In search of an answer, we spent an afternoon smacking a stainless steel dishwasher with a hammer and trying some of the internet’s most popular dent-removal hacks and products.
